I’ve never assigned a very short stunt journalism project the likes of which you’ll be doing from April 26 – May 2.  In fact I fancied that idea – a very brief immersion project – to be rather original. And fun. And useful in a concentrated learning-by-doing sort of way.

I should be used to this by now, this being the universe throwing things into our laps right when we need them, yet still, imagine my surprise when I read about the same idea, with a prize.  Brevity’s Nonfiction Blog post, dated April 9, announces an Immersion Contest.

Robin Hemley who leads the Nonfiction Writing Program at University of Iowa, will judge the contest of 500-word immersion stories. 500 words. Yeah, you wouldn’t want to repeat yourself with a word count that tight. Hemley breaks down five categories of immersion: the Reenactment, the Experiment, the Quest, the Investigation, and the Infiltration.  Deadline is May 11.  Just in time for our projects to be imagined, enacted, written, polished, and entered.

No, entering the contest isn’t mandatory for our class. But if the higher stakes help push you to better writing, then do it.  If you’re stuck on how to begin, remember that concept of creating tension in your writing. How can you find an experience to push back against the tide?

To inspire, I leave you with a list which comes from the opening of one of my favorite immersion experience books, The Kindness of Strangers: Penniless Across America by Mike McIntyre.  It’s about a guy who decides to face his fears and walk or hitchhike across the country with no money, no plans, nothing but a backpack and a sleeping bag.

“My final destination is Cape Fear, North Carolina, chosen as a symbol for all the fears I know I’ll have to conquer if I’m to go the distance. If I make it to Cape Fear, it will be as a different man from the one who starts the journey.

I’m afraid.

I’ve been afraid my whole life.

I was born scared.

I grew up afraid of the baby-sitter, the mailman, the birds in the trees, the next-door cat.

I’m afraid of the dark. I’m afraid of the ocean. I’m afraid of flying.

I’m afraid of the city and I’m afraid of the wilderness. I’m afraid of crowds and I’m afraid of being alone. I’m afraid of failure and I’m afraid of success.

I’m afraid of fire, lightning, earthquakes.

I’m afraid of snakes. I’m afraid of bats. I’m afraid of bears.

I’m afraid of spontaneous human combustion.

I’m afraid of losing an arm. I’m afraid of losing a leg. I’m afraid of losing my mind.

Yes, and I’m afraid of dying, too. But what really scares the hell out of me is living.

I’m afraid.

I rise early the morning of September 6 and scan the paper. The O.J. Simpson murder trial is the top story. Oliver Stone’s movie Natural Born Killers is number one at the box office.  A third body has been found shot to death on Interstate 80. And two men from the Midwest are on a cross-country killing spree.  I’ve got great timing.”

So go scare yourself. Or amaze yourself. Go challenge, inform, delight yourself.  Then write well about it.

Universe Extraordinaire

If you’re keeping up with the syllabus, you’ll note that the assignment for Wednesday, April 11 isn’t actually a reading. It’s a watching of a speech clip that Stephen Hawking gave at the 2011 European Zeitgeist event.  So of course if you did your homework, you now know who Stephen Hawking is, (if you didn’t already), and you also can use Zeitgeist in a sentence like:

Zeitgeist, the concept, means the spirit of the times.(Not to be confused with Zeitgeist: The Movie, a 2007 film which is actually one pretty good example of our current Zeitgeist, the concept.  Can anyone say Conspiracy Theory? Can anyone say cynical?)

There’s also Google’s Zeitgeist event, a gathering of the “leading thinkers of our time,” which takes its name from the concept and looks pretty cool.  Zeitgeist minds, a collection of videos from the events, is the source of the aforementioned Stephen Hawking speech.

What are other examples of the current Zeitgeist?

To return to the neti-neti leif motif of this semester, here’s an example of what Zeitgeist isn’t.  This story I’m about to tell is too small to be Zeitgeist.  It’s too personal, just between you and me.  Yet it’s just one more uncanny occurrence of the way our seemingly random universe happens to fall into a particular order that enhances what I’m hoping to teach you and these gifts never cease to delight me.

I’ll tell it in threes, you know why.

Part One: Or, Why I Consider Stephen Hawking To Be My Own Personal Physicist.

I’m in an on again/off again writing group. We’re an eclectic bunch writing everything from poetry to crime novels to nonfiction.  We meet at a Long Beach El Torito and scratch out lines over chips, salsa, and Coronas or Diet Coke. What keeps us together is a shared love of finding the perfect way to say exactly what we mean. One day, several years ago, I got an e-mail from one of our members.  It began like this:

Hi everyone – sorry to be tardy, but i would be grateful to get your comments on the beginning (just a dozen or so pages) of my new book with Stephen Hawking. 

To be perfectly honest, the brilliant writer didn’t need help from us. He and Stephen pretty much had it all figured out.  And even though I personally never bought in to the premise of the book –  that one must exclusively choose between belief in a higher being and belief that Inflation theory and M-theory elegantly explain the ways of the universe – I saved the e-mail because I loved how it showed that even the top scientific minds of our century still understand the value of getting good writerly feedback. The book, The Grand Design, was released in September, 2010; it’s the book Hawking references in the film clip.

Part Two: Or, Why I Want You To Know Who Stephen Hawking Is

When I created the syllabus, way back in January, I figured there was a better than 50/50 chance that you’d not know who Stephen Hawking is. (Hence the requirement to “quick research him before you watch.” And for those of you rolling your eyes right now, thinking I underestimate your knowledge: deep, deep apology. I’m talking average student here. Not you, of course.)  Even though this is a writing class, not a physics class, not a pop culture class, not a Who’s Who In The World class, I believe that the more a writer is engaged with all aspects of intelligent conversation about ideas, the better the writing.  As I mused, way back in January, about how to encourage exploration of this concept of self, I knew that at this point in the semester I wanted to continue the vein of scientific consideration which we began with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.  Additionally, the physical challenges that Hawking faces on a daily basis, seemed to tie in thematically with The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, foiled against the perspective of Autobiography of a Face. 

Of course those are superficial reasons and I rarely stop at skin deep.

Part Three: Physics Is Hot Right Now and Stephen Hawking Is Everywhere. Right Now.

Quite serendipitously, Stephen Hawking appeared as a guest on The Big Bang Theory  Thursday, April 5, a night within spitting distance of the assignment for you to learn who he is.  How does it happen that a Hawking assignment written months ago coincides with his TV appearance?  I don’t know. And I really don’t care, but I do get immense pleasure when the universe aligns for us like that.  Maybe you saw the show already.  Cool. If not, you can watch the full episode, here.  Or, if you want to view a short clip, click here.  Coincidentally, The Big Bang Theory, now in its 5th season, posted a 27 percent increase in ratings according a recent New York Times article.  (Read here.)  And by the way, I’m not saying that network sitcoms are the best way to get information, but I am saying that sometimes things you learn in school have real world applications while you’re watching TV.  Did you know that Stephen Hawking also appeared on Star Trek and, in cartoon form, on The Simpsons?

So now you can carry on a conversation about who Stephen Hawking is when you’re yacking about the latest episode of some TV show.  Oh yes, you’ll also be able to summarize and analyze his views on what we humans are, and, even better, share those views with others to incite conversation, dialogue, and idea exchange.  You might ultimately circle closer to a composition of self.  I mean really, if we humans are…”mere collections of fundamental particles of nature” are we any different from roses, even the beautiful red ones catching sunshine on my kitchen counter?

Oh yes, you knew I’d return to that, Composing Self, didn’t you.  Well, once again, you are right.

What Happened When the Professor Went On a Field Trip

I lied all the time as a teenager.

I told tales about where I was going, who I was going with, and what kinds of things I did while I was out of the house.  Somehow I rationalized all the deception by complaining that my parents were excessively strict and I wasn’t doing anything worse than my friends whose parents seemed to be fine with girls going on dates at 16, or driving to Palm Springs from Los Angeles alone at 17, or attending overnight house parties where no parents were home at 18.

After this admission, it would make perfect sense if you never believe anything I ever say, much less that I woke up one morning in my early 20s and vowed to never lie again because decided I was really tired of trying to remember which movies I was supposed to have seen, or where I was supposed to have spent the night.  Honestly, there was a little more to it than that.  My very self seemed at stake.  I wondered who I was if I couldn’t face my own life head on and true. What kind of craziness was it to act one way and pretend to be another?

I’m not proud of my past, and I do still owe my parents a very long apology, but I did vividly recalled that long ago girl recently when, once again, the literary world convulsed about the distinction between truth and art, nonfiction and made-up stuff.  The most current flashpoint ignited when Mike Daisey retracted some of his Apple Factory in China story which aired on This American Life. My personal experience may or may not be the reason I’m intensely passionate about truth as a concept in general.  It could also be that as a writer, teacher, and human being, I’m appalled at what might happen to a society which willingly accepts an eroded truth in exchange for a better story, a better bargain, a smoother ride.  Is it dangerous to allow things which are labeled “nonfiction” to be acceptable even if they didn’t happen quite the way they were written because then it will become easier to dismiss real atrocities presented as truth as possible fiction? This conundrum reminds me of listening to Elie Wiesel respond to a question during his “Memory and Hope” presentation at Chapman in 2010. The soft spoken gentle storyteller was asked:

Is Night a memoir and a novel?

He quickly responded:

There’s nothing fiction in it. It’s literature. It’s a witness. It’s a testimony.

Memoirs are supposed to be true. Witness and testimony, so help me God, are true.  And novels are accepted as fiction, even if, even if they’re born out of real events. Night is not a novel.

So when I perused the AWP catalog before heading to Chicago for the annual conference, one of the first panels that caught my eye was,”What’s Wrong with the Whole Truth?”  Even better when I discovered that one of the panelists would be Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the first text we read for this class. Here’s the catalog description:

Many writers feel comfortable molding the truth to create a more satisfying story, yet still calling their piece nonfiction as long as the emotional core and basic frame of the work remain true.  Not the writers on this panel. These authors, journalists, and nonfiction professors will explore the philosophy of factual versus emotional honesty and discuss how to achieve both—beautiful and moving nonfiction writing that is 100% true.

You can read a brief roundup of what happened during the entire presentation on Brevity’s Nonfiction Blog, here if you like.  You’ll find all the panel participants and an extended comments section which keeps the conversation alive.  But what I’d like to tell you doesn’t show up there, in fact this little anecdote doesn’t show up in any of the post-Chicago news I’ve read, yet for me it was one of the most compelling things I heard all weekend.

Rebecca Skloot graciously opened her moment at the microphone with an observation that perhaps we have a linguistic issue at the heart of this discussion of why nonfiction writers seem to be dropping like flies out of the whole truth sky.  Maybe there’s confusion, she says, that “Creative” doesn’t apply to the truth implied in the nonfiction label, rather to the way the truth is presented. She used the opening scene of Chapter 1 of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks as an example of the sort of excruciatingly time-consuming work she performed to get every detail of the book correct.

Rebecca begins by reading from the opening paragraphs of Chapter 1, page 13 in my book.

She stops and the end of the page and asks, “Now this happened in the 1950s, I wasn’t there. I wasn’t even born.  So how did I know all that?”  She proceeds to tell us.

She checked the weather bureau which tracks weather back for decades and yes, on that day it was, in fact, raining in Baltimore, Maryland. She asked Day, and others, “what kind of car did Day drive?”  “A Buick” was the consistent answer and then she found an old photo of Day standing by his car and she was able to confirm that yes, Day’s car at that time, was a Buick.

She went to Johns Hopkins which had archival photos of both the inside and the outside of the building.  She found a photo showing a tree by the front door and she showed the photo to a botanist who confirmed, “That’s an oak.”  She found a photo of the front desk and was able to describe it from the photo.

“So how did I get the line, ‘I’ve got a knot on my womb’? I’ve got Henrietta’s medical records but it sure doesn’t say that in there.  So over and over and over I interviewed family and friends who knew Henrietta and I asked them, what did she say? Did she tell you she was sick?  How did she describe her problem?”

“And to a one, the all said, ‘Henrietta said, I’ve got a knot on my womb.”

Rebecca says yes, of course this is an incredible amount of work, but “we don’t want people to lose credibility.”

She says the hardest parts of the book were writing the sections where she appeared. She says she re-interviewed people who were with her. “How do you remember what happened that day?” And they’d say, “Why are you asking me that, you were there.”

“I don’t want to get it wrong.  So much damage can be done by incorrect facts.”

Rebecca Skloot insists there’s no detail too small to nitpick.  She recounts her experience reading from her book in front of audiences and said she frequently reads the section where Henrietta, in the bathtub, discovers her “knot.” She says she knows the house Henrietta lived in at the time and she knew that house had a bathtub and Henrietta had told many people she found the knot on herself in the tub and there’s really only one way to find that lump.  “But I think I overstepped with “slowly spread her legs.”

“How did I know it was slowly?  I know it was a small bathtub, but do I know it was slowly?  That bugged me so much, the second edition I had my editor take out the word slowly so that’s one difference between the first edition and the second edition.”

Slowly.

Rebecca ended with, “Journalism techniques are undercut, underutilized in creative writing.”

Later on, when presentations have given way to Q & A, Rebecca sounded frustrated.

“I can’t believe we’re still having this conversation,” she says.  She recounts a personal story about fallout from the discovery that some key elements of Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea were untrue.  If you’d like to watch the 60 Minutes segment where Steve Kroft questions facts of that book, watch here.

Skloot said there were so many parallels between the two books. They were reported over a long period of time.  Both writers had started a foundation. She was inundated by queries, folks all wondering if she too had made any parts of her incredible story up. Calls. E-mails. Questions.  All assumed there must be some sort of guilt by association.

“I lost my credibility. It took me one entire year to rebuild my credibility the day the Three Cups of Tea story broke.”

A question from the audience: “Where comes this requirement that the essay form be fact?  You already said poetry doesn’t have to be true.  So who decides?  Why do essays have to be true?”

Rebecca answers “actually it’s publishers and bookstores who label it so.”

Philip Gerard, another panelist spoke up to remind that the term “essay” comes from the French essayer, meaning, to try.  “In an essay you deal with the world the way it is to get to the bottom of things.”

In truth.  As best you can discern. Because that’s where the real world is. And the real world is where we live.
